This site is being developed with the UK in mind but it is open to use by anyone anywhere in the world who has an electricity meter installed in their home.
Trying to be Green is NOT a calculator; it is an electricity tracker. A calculator is a useful tool for estimating your footprint (check out actonco2.direct.gov.uk) but it is based on questions and assumptions. If you want your real usage and you want to see if you can reduce your usage over time then you need Trying to be Green.
An electricity monitor clips onto your meter and gives you a portable reader showing your electricity consumption at any one time (the expensive ones can store the data too). If you have one of these then you will save yourself that trip to the cupboard under the stairs. It can be used as a great partner to Trying to be Green. However as they are pricey (£40++) we feel that they are no way essential... well maybe if you’re really really scared of spiders.
Trying to be Green is being developed by me and my husband. This is most definitely a labour of love with us working evenings and in spare moments to get it up and running. To be fair its really my husband who’s doing most of the developing, I’m more of an ideas person. Luckily he’s actually quite good at it and has been making a living from the web for many years now. He is part of the team behind a number of Web 2.0 community sites such as Forkd and Sleevenotez and has recently been described as an internet veteran!
Trying to be Green is a social enterprise whose emphasis is on doing the right thing, rather than making money.
Trying to be Green is run by individuals for individuals. We aim to keep our overheads down as low as possible. We will try and use grants and advertising to cover our unavoidable expenses.
